The ADINA Modeler (ADINA-M) is an add-on module to the ADINA User Interface program that provides solid modeling capabilities. With ADINA-M, solid geometry can be created directly in the ADINA User Interface program by creating ADINA-M solid primitives (e.g., blocks, cylinders, etc.) and using the ADINA-M tools to construct more complex solid geometries. ADINA-M can also be used to directly import geometry files from a wide range of CAD systems.
There are two versions of ADINA-M available, the version based on the Parasolid geometry kernel (called ADINA-M/PS) and the version based on the Open Cascade geometry kernel (called ADINA-M/OC).
ADINA-M/PS is based on the Parasolid kernel which is used by popular CAD systems such as NX, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, and Bentley Systems. Solid geometries from these and other Parasolid-based CAD systems can be directly imported through ADINA-M/PS into the ADINA User Interface. The imported Parasolid parts can be modified inside the ADINA User Interface using the tools in ADINA-M/PS.
ADINA-M/PS can also be used to import IGES files, where IGES surfaces can be "sewn" to form solid bodies. This geometry format is commonly used by CATIA.
The figures below show parts created in a CAD program, imported into the ADINA User Interface program with ADINA-M/PS, and meshed using the automatic free meshing capability in the ADINA User Interface.
ADINA-M/OC is based on the Open Cascade geometry kernel. Hence, users are able to take advantage of CAD programs such as FreeCAD, CAD Exchanger and Datakit to create parts that can be directly imported into ADINA-M/OC. The Open Cascade files are boundary representation (.brep) type.
ADINA-M/OC can also be used to directly import geometry files in STEP (.stp) format, and in IGES format, where IGES surfaces can be "sewn" to form solid bodies. The IGES format is commonly used by CATIA.
ADINA-M/OC uses the same commands as ADINA-M based on Parasolid. Hence, those who are already familiar with ADINA-M/PS can also use ADINA-M/OC with minimal effort.
The capabilities of ADINA-M/OC include:
- Importing B-Rep models created by the program or other CAD programs based on Open Cascade
- Defining solid primitives (block, sphere, cylinder, torus, cone, pipe, prism), sheet bodies (trimmed surfaces), and transformed bodies
- Creating solid bodies by sweeping or revolving body faces
- Modifying bodies by merging, intersecting, or subtracting operations with other bodies
- Modifying bodies through blending (filleting) and chamfering of body edges
As described in the web page on our IGES interface, the geometric entities in an IGES file can be imported into ADINA as wireframe entities or as solid geometry. Note that ADINA-M/OC supports additional IGES entities not supported by ADINA-M/PS, such as
- manifold solid B-Rep object entity, type 186
- vertex entity, type 502
- edge entity, type 504
- loop entity, type 508
- face entity, type 510
- shell entity, type 514
Below, we show two examples of solid parts created from IGES files with meshes generated in ADINA.
By licensing the ADINA-M/PS or ADINA-M/OC, the following features are available in the ADINA User Interface (AUI):
