Simulation of Impeller Flow

The sliding mesh capability is a new feature in ADINA 8.2. This feature allows meshes in different regions to move relative to each other. Physical variables across the sliding mesh interface are continuous. A sliding mesh interface boundary is particularly useful for solving flows involving one or more rotating parts.

An application of ADINA to an impeller-baffle interaction problem is shown in the above animation. The geometry is a section of a 3-D channel with a 4-blade impeller at the center and four baffles at the wall. The flow is driven by the rotating impeller, and with the four stationary baffles, the computation becomes complicated. The flow domain is divided into two regions: the center region with a rotating mesh and closed wall region with a stationary mesh. A sliding mesh boundary condition is applied at the interface of the two regions.

The relative motion of the meshes can be seen at the upper right-hand corner of the above animation. The flow field solution is depicted by the pressure band plot and the velocity vector plot.
