we can only describe here in general terms the analysis performed. ADINA is
a very powerful tool for crush simulations.
There are many challenging analysis problems in the automobile industry. One problem that is particularly difficult to solve in a physically correct manner, namely, statically or in low speed implicit dynamics, is a crush problem involving complex contact conditions and large plastic strains.
US Federal standard FMVSS 214, Side Impact Protection, specifies performance requirements for protection of occupants in side impact crashes. The purpose of this standard is to reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury to occupants of passenger cars by specifying strength requirements for side doors (quoted from Ref.).
One part of FMVSS 214 is FMVSS 214S (Static analysis), in which a steel crush post is pushed into a car door. This process is shown in the schematic diagrams above. Clearly, the process is quasi-static and results in large plastic deformations of the car door.
We wanted to present a car door model and impressive results of a simulation according to FMVSS 214S using ADINA. All components of the door are modeled using 3- and 4-node 3D-shell elements, with the plastic-cyclic material model. Large displacements / large strains are assumed.
In the process considered, contact is established, both between the crush post and car door components, and also between the individual car door components. Single-sided contact is used between the crush post and the car door components. Double-sided contact is used between the car door components, with symmetric contact pairs.
Since FMVSS 214S corresponds to a "slow" physical process, the ADINA automatic-time-stepping procedure with low-speed dynamics is used very effectively.
